The 411 On Janet

Why or how did you get into therapy? Originally earning a Bachelors’ degree in Communication Studies, I was fortunate to have experienced a variety of enjoyable and lucrative sales positions. Add a husband, a house, and two small children to that scenario and I found myself searching for something more, a career that combined my love of communications with a more family-friendly work environment. I went back to college as a “non-traditional” student and completed all of the undergraduate and graduate coursework necessary to earn a Masters’ degree in Speech-Language Pathology. I accepted an SLP position in a local, public school district, actually, my children’s school district, and was happily employed as a public school SLP for 15 years. It was wonderful! We all went to school together everyday and enjoyed the same holidays and school vacation days. When my youngest child went off to college and my oldest child went off to Afghanistan, I decided it was time for me to make a change as well. I wanted to work within the medical side of my profession and this is when I found Advanced Medical. As a new “empty-nester” with a very supportive husband, I found myself, for the first time, able to travel solo.

What are some of your hobbies? My husband and I love to travel together and we have enjoyed many wonderful destinations in the Caribbean and all around the US. We also enjoy cooking together, watching movies, sporting events, and occasionally, participating in ballroom dance.

What is your favorite travel location and why? I love any place warm, sunny, and near the ocean. I am particularly fond of Clearwater Beach, Florida however, these travels have been for pleasure and not for employment. Although Advanced Medical has positions available in these destinations, I have only accepted the travel assignments that are near or around central Illinois. I am most comfortable in the small, rural, farming communities that are not too far from home and this is where Advanced Medical has sent me. I have enjoyed all of my assignments and I believe it is the “people” that make each assignment special. I have been very fortunate to have worked with many outstanding therapists, nurses, administrators, and kitchen staff. I have also been very fortunate to have worked some truly remarkable patients and families.

Where would your dream assignment be and why? I would love to be able to live and work in a warm, sunny location, near the ocean. For me, there is something inherently “happy” about sunshine and sand. Considering all of the beautiful beach vacations I have enjoyed with my family, I would have to say that Clearwater Beach, Florida is my favorite. It would be my dream assignment location.

Tell us about your family! My husband and I celebrated our 27th year of marriage in August. He is a Psychologist with OSF Healthcare in Normal, Illinois. We have two amazing children. Our son is a Specialist with the US Army and has served in Afghanistan. Our daughter is a cinema major at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale and has produced some very impressive short films!

If you could have a super power what would it be? Happy Bubbles …. I know it sounds weird but wouldn’t it be great to be able to hold out the palm of your hand and surround a person with a “happy bubble” so that, at least for a little while, they wouldn’t feel sadness or loneliness, fear or anger …. just happiness!
