The figures above, collected from resources like Indeed and BLS, do reflect average wage and salary information in the State of Illinois. They, however, do not clearly highlight discrepancies in pay that can arise from factors like education, years of experience, or setting. They also don’t offer a complete sense of compensation, which can be affected by cost of living, bonuses, stipends, and taxes.

PT Settings in Illinois

A new grad may be under the impression that committing to one setting or permanent position after graduating from a DPT is the only way to succeed as a physical therapist. To put it simply, these are myths.

Through 13-week travel assignments, traveling allows you to try different settings in locations across the country, the same setting in different facilities, or extend at ones you love. This gives you the opportunity to gain skills and knowledge beyond those offered at permanent positions with static teams. Directors and facilities appreciate the diverse experience on a traveler’s resume. In addition, trying different settings ensures that you find your true calling before you commit.

Below you will find short descriptions of a few of the settings you can explore in Illinois.

Skilled Nursing Facilities

At a SNF, a new grad PT will help restore and maintain physical function for patients who have neuromuscular, musculoskeletal, integumentary, and/or cardiopulmonary diagnoses. A new grad will learn to evaluate patients who are usually from the geriatric population (though there are exceptions), and create and execute care plans that can improve their mobility, strength, and quality of life.

Acute Care

In an acute setting a new grad PT will learn to assist patients who are in critical condition due to illness or injury. Working with a medical team, physical therapists will help ensure that patients are discharged safely. They may also offer recommendations for continued rehabilitation, medical equipment,  and assistive devices that may be needed after discharge.

Home Health

If you just completed your DPT and you’re hesitant to commit to a work routine that has you going to the same facility every day, the variety encountered on a home health assignment may be a good fit for you. Although the responsibility may be a bit daunting at first, this setting will teach you independence, confidence, and relationship building. You will also get to treat many different diagnoses, such as joint replacement, fractures, stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, heart failure, and more, for a diverse range of patients.
