OT Settings in Texas

You probably heard a lot about settings while in OT school. Different therapists gravitate towards different patients, facilities, and treatments. One practitioner may tell you that school settings are the best and another may tell you that they are the worst.

And now that you’ve passed the NBCOT, you may be under the assumption that you need to settle on a setting to start your career. Well that just isn’t true. On our team, you will have the professional flexibility to try different settings through travel assignments while knowing that you have excellent benefits and financial stability. You can try different settings in locations across the country, try the same setting in different facilities, or extend at one you love. Your career path is yours to carve!

Below you will find short descriptions of a few of the settings you can explore in Texas.

Home Health

In this setting, a new grad OT will be given the opportunity to make a significant impact where it is needed most, in a patient’s place of residence. You will evaluate and assist with daily activity performance within a crucial environment. A few of the assessments and treatments that you may engage in include:

  • Work simplification
  • Coordination
  • Meal preparation
  • Adaptive equipment assessment and instruction
  • Independent living training

Skilled Nursing Facilities

A SNF is an excellent setting for a new grad OT to learn about how interdisciplinary and comprehensive care plans can help patients rehabilitate or live more comfortably. SNFs employ OTs, PTs, SLPs, audiologists, and nurses. You will gain experience and grow alongside other healthcare practitioners. The OT interventions that you may be responsible for in a SNF will depend greatly on the patient’s needs.

Acute Care

The acute care setting is one where a new grad OT can learn a lot about assisting patients who are in critical condition in an inpatient facility. OT interventions in this setting will change depending on the patient, but you will most likely help with facilitating early mobilization, restoring function, and preventing further decline. You may also get a chance to play a critical role in transitioning the patient out of this setting once stabilized.

The application fee for an occupational therapist license in Texas is $140.00. You don’t have to worry about this cost though, because at Advanced Travel Therapy we reimburse you for one license per assignment. That’s right, if you want, you can pursue assignments in states all over the country without concern over the extra expense of licensure. We also try to help as much possible when it comes to acquiring the license since we know the process can be a little daunting.

Living In Texas

Have you heard the saying that everything is bigger and better in Texas? Although statistically speaking this can’t always be true, it’s usually a pretty fair description. Food, sports, monuments, attractions, events, and just about everything has a big, bold, and vibrant Texan twist in “The Lone Star State.”

To start, Texas is huge! It is the second largest state. If it were an independent country it would be the 40th largest in the world after Chile! Its south-central location and enormous square footage make way for a complex and diverse geography. Residents and visitors can experience all sorts of landscapes without even leaving the state’s borders.

For the new grad OT who is seeking to fill time off with the outdoors, there’s so much to explore, one travel assignment may not cut it. This page simply cannot cover all the awesome things you'll want to tick off the 'Texas Adventure Bucket List', but here are a few suggestions to whet your appetite:

  • Hiking around the mind-blowing Big Bend National Park
  • Floatin’ down the Guadalupe and Comal Rivers
  • Exploring the nine ecosystems in the Big Thicket National Preserve
  • Swimming in the state’s grandest watering hole, the Hamilton Pool Preserve
  • Climbing rocks in Hueco Tanks State Park
  • Kite surfing and kickboarding at South Padre Island
  • Horseback riding across Palo Duro Canyon

Not one for the outdoors? Don’t fret, Texas is chock-full of fun and relaxing activities for the urbanite who prefers the metropolitan backdrop. Cities like Austin, San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston have awesome food, art, music, and shopping scenes. A few things you can do when you’re not at work that you can only do in Texas include going to the State Fair of Texas, checking out a real Texas rodeo, eating authentic Tex-Mex, and catching a Texan Friday night high school football game. We assure you, no matter what it is that gets you going, you’ll find it somewhere in this state!

If you’re not an OT yet but are interested in becoming one there are few excellent OT programs in Texas. Below you will find a couple of links to get you started on the path to your bright future!
