Next Conference and Capitol Hill Day Preview
Next week, we have a veritable doubleheader of inspired activism and academic programing for physical therapy professionals. The APTA NEXT Conference and Capitol Hill Day rally will be held June 3-6 in National Harbor, Baltimore – just a quick water taxi away from Washington, DC. The conference is packed with networking events, educational seminars, and social gatherings with a patriotic bent.
The event will be held at the Gaylord hotel, a sprawling complex with a distinctive theme park feel (not as bad as it sounds). Advanced Medical will be camped out at booth #1005 with a couple of special guests in tow. Traveling duo and PT mentors Lindsey Parker and Seth Rohde will be on hand to give insightful and entertaining information on life as a traveling PT.
The Hill Day event is a well-orchestrated march on congress that brings in scores of therapy professionals to the Hill for crucial lobbying on a diverse set of issues. I have been fortunate to attend a number of Hill Days and seeing passionate advocacy up close in the halls of our government is a genuine thrill. Over 1000 therapists are expected to swarm the Capitol Hill lawn and we hope to see you there. Here are some of the featured happenings of both events:
Preparation for Hill Day advocacy: This 3 hour session is mandatory for those meeting with legislators on June 4th. The seminar will be critical in understanding concise talking points for productive lobbying. It will also be a chance to meet others from your state delegation to coordinate schedules.
Capitol Steps: The Lighter Side of Politics: Over 30 years ago a group of senate staffers started the Capitol Steps, a political satire group. 34 albums later and they are still trucking. They perform at the NEXT conference.
PT Rally on the Hill: Before the legislative visits therapists will be charged up by the APTA president and multiple congressional leaders. Expect some serious noise to rattle the Neoclassical architecture of our capitol Thursday morning.
Keynote Speaker Billie Jean King: This tennis legend and LGBT pioneer will be give the opening keynote address at National Harbor. Billie Jean King has been on the list of 100 most important Americans by Life magazine.
Oxford Debate: This old-school style debate will ask the question: Is Physical Therapy a business? How important are business management skills for therapists? This event is always one of the most popular at the conference.
PT Foundation Gala: Recognizing accomplished scholars in PT research, as well as distinguished students, this formal event benefits the Foundation for Physical Therapy. It includes dinner, entertainment, and an awards ceremony.
These are just a few of the big things to look forward to in our nation’s capitol next week. Stay tuned for live updates from the conference and if you are in attendance we hope to see you there. Until next time…
