Speaking of…Kelsey Besler
Kelsey Besler has been a long time traveler with Advanced Medical, and has completed assignments in North Carolina, Florida, and Texas. She has been an active mentor in the new grad program for over two years, helping new grad SLP’s as they transition into the exciting field of traveling! Her wisdom and knowledge has been an invaluable resource to the SLP’s under her mentorship. Her recruiter says this about Kelsey: “Kelsey Besler is not only amazing at what she does clinically, she has made it a point to make everlasting friendships in each town she has taken an assignment. Her personality is just as impressive as her professionalism, and facilities were always sad to see her leave.” We are so happy to be able to feature Kelsey as part of our series featuring some of our amazing SLP travelers as we celebrate Better Hearing and Speech Month!
Why did you want to be a SLP? I spent time in speech therapy as a child and remember having so much fun. I initially went into college with the intention of working with children but I quickly developed an interest and love for the geriatric population.
What is your favorite thing about being a SLP? Getting to hear life stories and experiences from my patients and learning from them. Also being able to help people return to their prior level of function.
How do you address the stereotype that SLP’s only treat speech? If only we all had a dollar for every time we heard that! I usually just smile and say its so much more than that- sometimes I offer further explanation but it depends on who I’m talking to.
What is your favorite diagnosis to treat and why? Dementia- I love to try and learn how my patients see and interpret the world from their point of view and work to adapt their environment/interactions to make them happy and successful during the disease process.
What is your biggest piece of advice to someone starting out in the field? Have an open mind and fake it til you make it!
Favorite place you have traveled to? San Antonio, TX
One fun fact about yourself: My sister is also an SLP! Keeping it in the family! That’s not really about me though- one time I was on MTV’s TRL with Carson Daly!
Thank you for being a part of our team Kelsey!
