Speaking of…Janet Shannon
Janet Shannon is another fantastic SLP who is also one of our New Grad Mentors. Janet has been with Advanced Medical for over two years and began working as a travel therapist looking for a change of pace after working in the schools for many years. Janet has jumped into travel with both feet, and has exceled working in skilled nursing facilities with adults. Janet’s recruiter mentions that, “Janet is always willing to go above and beyond. She is a prime example of who we are and what we represent at Advanced Medical. She does everything with passion, and I am so thankful to have her as a part of my team.” We are also thankful for the guidance and wisdom Janet is able to share with new grad SLP’s both in schools and in skilled nursing facilities. Advanced Medical is much better having fantastic SLP’s like Janet!
Why did you want to be an SLP? Beginning as a young child and through my teenage years, I wanted to be either a nurse or a teacher. I had always had a love for helping others and a natural talent for activities involving speech and language. When I discovered the field of Speech-Language Pathology, there was no question in my mind that this was the profession for me.
What is your favorite thing about being an SLP? I love that my profession involves helping others to get better and utilizes my ability to teach, educate, and train.
What do you do in order to creatively engage your students/patients? I learn about each patient; what’s important to them and what they enjoy. I tailor my therapy sessions to incorporate their interests and their needs into our activities.
What is your favorite diagnosis to treat and why? Dysarthria: I really enjoy treating motor speech disorders. It is exciting to use my knowledge of anatomy and physiology to facilitate increased speech intelligibility. I also really enjoy teaching compensatory strategies and techniques.
What is your biggest piece of advice to someone starting out in the field? Never stop learning! Utilize the vast amount of information available on the web as well as from colleagues to better your clinical skills a little bit, every day.
Favorite place you have traveled to? My favorite places to travel to for pleasure is around the Clearwater Beach and Saint Pete Beach, Florida areas. My favorite places to travel to for work is around the rural, central Illinois areas.
One fun fact about yourself: I enjoy stringing sea shells on fishing line to make rosary beads.
