Spring Preview 2016
Sure, it’s a couple weeks early. Sure, some of our employees are still seeing snowfall, and sure, opening day baseball, St. Patty’s day, and march madness have yet to appear. However, I decree it’s cool to commence with spring – the “king of all seasons” – with its blooming flowers, tranquil temperatures, sun-drenched festivals, and overwrought clichés about renewal. Having had our first signature event (CSM) in Los Angeles (a city that lives a perpetual spring) may have something to do with my early call. Had we been huddled up in the gray morass of the northeast instead, perhaps this post would have been postponed a few weeks – but like Punxsutawney Phil (the groundhog), I am bringing it in early for 2016. Advanced Medical has an ambitious lineup around the corner. Our new grad team, led by SLP Melissa Jones, has been busy selling the country on our brand of travel. A company that offer diversity in both geography and clinical setting, while offering substantive mentoring and continuing education captures the essence of our craft. For speech therapists, our CFY program that utilizes virtual mentoring capabilities and our initial foray into tele-therapy has opened up new avenues for professional growth. Now let’s take a look at some of the highlights of our spring season.
TSHA Convention March 10-12
Grab your biggest hat and join us in Fort Worth, TX for the Texas Speech and Hearing Convention. Fort Worth bills itself as a city of “cowboys and culture”, (if that sounds counterintuitive to you, you’re not alone) and has a frontier feel entirely distinct from the more cosmopolitan Dallas, despite being in close proximity. This is the 60th anniversary of the TSHA and the convention has set up numerous special events to celebrate. A few of these include a ghost tour, School Spirit Day which includes a tailgate party, and the always popular Praxis Bowl – a competition between SLP programs throughout the state. Advanced Medical is setting up camp at booth 315, where Melissa Jones will be joined by our school therapy director Seth Mukai.
APTA Federal Advocacy Forum April 3-5
Always one of my favorite events, this gathering of physical therapists is an enthusiastic rally that includes a full day of lobbying on Capitol Hill. The event programming combines deep policy discussion with fundamental tips on how to be an effective citizen advocate. A big part of this year’s forum centers around the rapidly occurring shift to alternative payment models. The APTA regulatory affairs department will be on hand to educate and preview the upcoming strategies to ensure that physical therapy is well-positioned in the new landscape. Other vital issues of note include the seemingly eternal battle to end the therapy caps (exceptions process ends in late 2017), concussion management uniformity, and the push to incorporate therapists into the National Health Service Corps. The event will be held at the Grand Hyatt right in the heart of DC.
AOTA National Convention April 7-10
All my lyricizing about warm temperatures and I fail to mention we head to Chicago for AOTA. I put very good odds on some chills coming off Lake Michigan in early April. Still, it’s difficult to whine about visiting the “windy city”- crown jewel of the Midwest. With over 10k occupational therapists and 1k plus education sessions, this is the largest gathering of OT’s in the world. The motto for this year is Evidence and Outcomes: Empowering the Profession. The focus is on using evidence to discern and apply best practices and bring the professions distinct ability to connect and collaborate to the fore. Advanced Medical will have a large contingent on hand, including multiple OT mentors who can crystallize the travel experience for curious students. The convention is at McCormick Place, the largest convention center in North America. There, you will find a bustling environment brimming with educational opportunities, networking avenues, and high profile speakers, including the farewell address from outgoing AOTA president Virginia (Ginny) Stoffel PhD, OT, BCMH, FAOTA who will discuss the importance of the AOTA family. Special events throughout Conference include the Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lecture, Tech Day & Happy Hour, and Fitness Sessions, just to name a few! You can read more about it here.
Colorado APTA Spring Conference April 15-17
Advanced Medical has always taken pride in supporting the therapy organizations located in our home states of Florida and Colorado. We sponsor pub nights, visit state campuses, and attend state association gatherings. This year is no exception, as we visit the picturesque ski village of Keystone for the APTA Colorado spring convention. Our team looks forward to a day of networking and education with our fellow Coloradans. It doesn’t hurt that the event is held at the Keystone Lodge and Spa. Bring your ski’s because there may be a few more runs left in the season.
CSHA Convention April 28-30
Wow, its back to Anaheim for SLP Melissa Jones, as she heads up our team at the California Speech and Hearing Association spring conference. No word yet on if our inspiring Minnie ears and Micky hats from CSM 2016 will be making an encore. The conference hosts top presenters in the SLP and Audiology fields who will provide over 24 CE hours covering a diverse array of topics. Attendance figures make this the largest speech and hearing event on the west coast. New to this year’s event is a student lounge and an awards luncheon. Our experience recruiting team will be there to soak up that California magic and educate SLP students on our pioneering CFY program.
Until next time…
